How to Install Patio Lights With an Installation Kit

September 5, 2023

It may seem daunting, however, installing patio lights using an installation kit is a fairly simple process. They contain everything you will need to set up patio or bistro lights in just a few steps, so you can enhance your space without unsightly sagging or the aggravation of a complicated process.

Here’s how to install patio lights with our kit:

Step 1: Determine the placement of the lights

The best placement of patio lights can depend on various factors, including the size and layout of your patio, the desired ambiance, and personal preference.  Overhead lighting can provide overall illumination for the entire patio area. If your patio has pathways or walkways, consider placing lights along the edges to define the pathways and enhance safety.  Before installing the lights, determine where you want to hang them and measure the distance between the points where and how the lights will be anchored.

Step 2: Assemble the installation kit

Before you get too far you might want to gather a few tools: ladder, power drill, Phillips screwdriver, plyers, tape measure, and a pencil.  The installation kit should come with all the necessary hardware and instructions. Assemble the kit according to the instructions provided.

Step 3: Install the anchors

Common exterior wall materials include brick, stucco, concrete, or siding. The type of wall will determine the appropriate anchor and installation method. Decide where you want to install the anchors on the exterior wall. Use a pencil or marker to mark the locations accurately. Ensure the markings are level and aligned as desired. Drill holes into the surface where you want to anchor the lights and insert the anchors provided in the kit.

Step 4: Attach the guide wire

Measure the distance between the starting and ending points of the guide wire. Add a few extra feet for adjustments and tensioning. Use wire cutters to cut the guide wire to the desired length. Once the anchors are in place, attach the guide wire to them using the hooks provided in the kit. Using pliers or tensioning devices specifically designed for guide wires, tighten the wire until it’s taut and has minimal sag. Make sure the wire is level and straight along its length. Adjust the tension as needed until you achieve the desired tightness.

Step 5: String the lights

Now that the guide wire is securely in place, attach the patio lights to the guide wire. Most patio lights have hooks or loops for easy attachment. Use clips provided in the kit typically either twist ties or zip ties. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for clip spacing and placement of the lights.

Step 6: Connect the lights to power

Now it’s time to see all your hard work in its full glory. Once all the lights are in place, connect them to the power source according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Once lit you can survey your work and make any adjustments to ensure they are evenly spaced and aligned as desired.

Step 7: Connect to existing 12V landscape lighting

Consider using a low-voltage lighting system because low-voltage lighting systems operate on 12-volt power and typically use a transformer to reduce the voltage from your home’s electrical system. We also have specially designed patio lighting that will tie into your existing low voltage system.

Step 8: Always prioritize safety

Consider using safety goggles, work gloves, and any other necessary protective gear when working with tools and electricity. Consider this a two-person job. Someone needs to keep that ladder stable.

Our installation kit includes:
