A New Solution to an Unpopular Holiday Task: LED Lighting

Stringing up Christmas lights has traditionally been an unpopular holiday task. Untangling wires, balancing on a ladder so you can attach them to the house, are all chores associated with this endeavor – But the biggest problem for many people, is finding that mysterious broken bulb. Hours are lost and tempers flare–most of us remember that classic scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation where Clark Griswold nearly loses his mind, while attempting to decorate his house for the holiday–but this is where LED Christmas lights can show their true benefit. Never again will you have to ask, “Russ, we checked every bulb, didn’t we?”

LED Christmas lights use Light Emitting Diodes rather than a traditional incandescent bulb. LEDs do not have a filament inside, which can burn out and take the entire string of bulbs with it. Instead, the diode inside directly converts electricity into light = another benefit of this light source, which is the absence of excessive heat and wasted electricity.

LEDs have been around for a long time, but only caught on for use as Christmas lights in recent years. One reason is color – LEDs originally only came in limited colors, and the “white” was more blue looking. Another problem was a lack of brightness of LEDs. The potential was there however, and advanced LEDs did solve these problems. Today you can find LED Christmas lights in all kinds of shapes and sizes. They can blink just like the regular incandescent lights, and come in a wide range of colors.

The end result, is a string of lights that uses about one-tenth of the electricity, than the more commonly used incandescent lights. They are also encased in virtually unbreakable acrylic plastic rather than fragile glass, so broken bulbs (and mistakenly stepping on one) won’t result in a holiday tragedy. Another benefit of LED holiday lighting is their life expectancy – They are rated to last for up to 50,000 hours, which is about 25 times longer than their incandescent counterpart.

Finally, caring for LED lights is simple. With such a long life expectancy and durable construction, users can simply roll them up to be stored away until next year, and can anticipate them to be fully functioning when pulled back out of storage.
