Vintage Christmas Decorating

September 17, 2011

If you ever found a metal slinky, Malibu Barbie, Big Wheel, Connect 4, Chatty Cathy or game of Operation under your Christmas tree or as a holiday gift, chances are these commercials will take you right back there.

And if you still treasure those Polaroid pictures of yourself playing with an Easy Bake Oven or the Six-Million-Dollar Man, why not recreate that effect in your own home this year? Thanks to a wealth of vintage-inspired LED Christmas lights, you don’t have to sacrifice safety or energy efficiency, with those ancient lights you dug out of a moldy box in your parents’ attic.

Whether you want to call them teardrops, strawberries, or those bulbs my grandparents used to have, these lights will lend an air of retro cool to your holiday décor. You can go full 1970s with a 25-bulb string of flicker-free C7 or C9 LED Lights. You will also be happy to know that the familiar-shaped lights, that your family used for years, is now offered in a smooth opaque bulb Red, Blue, Multi, or Warm White Color choices. Or give the LED Retrofit Bulbs a try. You can actually use these to replace your old glass bulbs (make sure your wire is still in good condition), or combine them with a Socket Stringer to make your own strin of lights. Any of these options will add a nice decorative touch to both indoor and outdoor displays, and here are just a few of the reasons LED lights are a huge improvement over the ones you (or your parents) remember:

  • They remain cool to the touch, so they’re safer around trees/shrubs, potentially combustible decorations, the roof of your house, and indoors too
  • You no longer have to worry about one bulb shorting out the whole string
  • They last 100 times longer than incandescent lights
  • They use at least 75 percent less energy than other lighting choices, reducing your environmental footprint and saving you money.
